The Next Great Generation

They call us the Millennial Generation.

The Next Great Console

next gen consoleMy generation loves console gaming. We have fond memories of our Super Nintendos, stories of our epic multiplayer battles in Goldeneye, and woeful sagas starring our Playstation’s disc read errors. We love our consoles now more than ever as they do more and more. We play with people all across the world, download games from home, play movies, and even control games with our movements.

These new video game systems have been successful due to Gen Y. As consoles become friendly to more generations we are looking to other gaming platforms.

A significant amount of our gaming has moved to mobile phones and netbooks. The iPhone has become the new platform for mobile gaming and Facebook games have become our favorite new tool of procrastination. These games are easy to access and entertain us without a dedication of time on our part. This isn’t much of a surprise since our digital lives are centered around our laptops and our phones. But these games are generally low in production value and are limited by the hardware that runs them.
Companies like Nvidia and Intel are pushing their hardware to achieve high quality graphics in mobile electronics, but even with Nvidia’s Ion , Intels new Atom, or Quallcom’s new Snapdragon game immersion is still lacking. Gen Y’ers love big blockbuster games with complex plots and stunning graphics (Its hard to be excited by these things on a two inch LCD). Mobile games just aren’t potent enough to curb our gaming appetite.
Maybe PC gaming can provide the blockbuster entertainment we crave. If we wander from the console to a PC we find that it provides a blockbuster experience even better than our beloved console. The games are longer, the plots are written better, and the graphics are awe inspiring. Powerful gaming desktops with dedicated graphics cards and massive cases are able to churn out gaming experiences that blow away any console. But we don’t have the money to purchase a $2000 PC. We also don’t have the time to give to never ending PC epics like World of Warcraft.
The console carefully balances production value with quick and easy access. As a generation that has always gamed on the console; we rely on that balance. While mobile games are easy to play during a lunch break, and Hardcore PC games are jaw dropping beautiful, the console will always be our choice.
