Minx Nails: Fingertip Fashion à la Beyoncé

nailsI’m addicted to nail polish. I buy it often, I wear it always, and I prefer colors outside of classic pale pinks and fire engine reds. When I heard I could spice up my digits beyond glitter polish and crazy shades, I knew this was my next step in achieving fabulousness on my fingertips.  My nails were about to get Minxed.

Minx is a flexible film applied to nails with a heat source, kind of like a shrink-wrap advertisement you’d see on a car. It comes in styles like camouflage, cheetah, flames, stripes, polka dots, plaid and paisley. It’s no surprise it’s become the must-have accessory of pop stars like Katy Perry, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga.

During the election, some celebs showed their support with a custom Obama Minx manicure. Other stars like Victoria Beckham, Blake Lively and Megan Fox have all used this sassy service.

Minx Nails is a high fashion look, at a high fashion price. The nearest salon charges a whopping $50, which is a far cry from the $3 bottles of polish I usually buy.

In a temporary lapse of sanity and financial responsibility, me and my inner Beyonce decided to go get Minxed.

After arriving at the trendy salon on Newbury Street and picking out my design of choice, I was anxious to see how the Minx magic was accomplished. It can only be applied by a “Minx Certified Professional,” so I anticipated some fancy tools, secret ingredients, and complicated maneuvers…Only the best for Beyonce, right?

Not so much. In the end, it was pretty much just a sticker. No fancy machine, no secret potion, just a heat lamp and a steady hand.

Hold on a minute…who tricked me into spending $50 on a nail decal? That’s the cost of about 15 bottles of Sally Hansen polish! Practically a lifetime supply. I rarely spend that much on anything, let alone something that may only last a few days.

If Nancy Nobody were the only one paying absurd prices for “fingertip fashion,” my $50 would have laughed at her from inside my wallet. But here I am, having fallen victim to the lure of the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

Regardless, I’m feeling extra fancy with my celeb status manicure. I’m starting to look more like Beyonce every minute. I am…Sasha Fierce.
