Change is what we want to believe in

We switch from job to job because our college applications told us we needed to be well rounded. Because the restaurant manager said we needed experience just to seat people to their tables. Because our parents told us they wanted better for us than what they had. We like change. We thrive on it, we’re used to it, and we want it.

Cultural decline: not our fault!

By Matt McQuaid on July 23rd, 2010

Someone will always be asking, “What’s up with kids these days?” But youth is a reflection of society, and as our culture free-falls into a downward spiral, so do we. While many find it easy to point the finger of blame at us, the path downhill was paved by our forefathers.

Generation Y doesn’t march on the streets. Instead they take to Facebook and Twitter to protest. Could it be, though, that this is just as effective?

Why I Quit My Job in the Midst of Global Financial Chaos

By Acree Graham on July 12th, 2010

Our parents told us we could do whatever we wanted. But the financial collapse coincided with the emergence of the most educated applicant pool in history and we were forced to find any job we could. With a 14 percent unemployment rate and a generally dismal outlook, we realized our dreams might be out of reach. But we still don’t take those cubicle jobs that people would give limbs for. Because we ask, why shouldn’t work be fun?

‘The motion picture event of a generation’

By Jen Schmidt on July 7th, 2010

The new trailer for the seventh and final movie(s) declares that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be “the motion picture event of a generation,” and while that may sound high minded, it is not without merit. Beyond the pages of the books, the Harry Potter series has had a significant social impact for Gen Y. It allowed children, as well as teenagers and more than a few adults, to escape the real world and enter a world where magic is real, and anything is possible.

Sports: the universal unifier

By Jen Schmidt on June 22nd, 2010

You may hate soccer, but you know all about the blown call in the USA vs. Slovenia game. You may not follow basketball, but you watched Rondo hit that three-pointer with 18 seconds left in Game Seven of the NBA finals. Sports are a universal unifier. They are cross-generational, and in a time when generations are competing both in the work place and on the social stage, it is comforting to know that there is at least one thing we all have in common.

The Millennial Generation is, without a doubt, the most connected generation yet. But it turns out connectedness isn’t everything. A recent article on the website Millennial Marketing says, “Millennials are some of the most avid users of mobile and Internet technology….[They] rely heavily on digital media to manage their daily life activities, stay informed and [...]

There are approximately 60 million people who are considered to be part of the Millennial Generation. I am one of them. And I’m damn proud of it. We are the best educated, most tech-savvy, globalized demographic the world has ever seen; yet we are also the most misunderstood. The Next Great Generation hopes to close [...]

Gen Y and Technology? We’re Old Friends.

By Tenley Wilson on May 18th, 2010

They say that Gen Y is “no better or worse at using technology than the rest of the population.” Wait a minute. Whoever said this wasn’t there when my Mom cried because she couldn’t figure out how to turn on her new computer. Or when my Gramma didn’t go on a trip because she couldn’t [...]

Is College Diversity a Response to Gen Y?

By Evan Roberts on May 6th, 2010
Categories: Education Week

Embracing diversity and multiculturalism seem to be two huge persuaders for college and universities who want to attract Gen Y students. They have established programs for recruiting both internationally and intranationally, and it is not uncommon to see a school boast of their student population representing “40 states and 37 countries around the globe.” Was [...]
